The End Again

Who could foresee that disasterous weather would strike the Gulf coast?

Because I believe in the future, I am politically progressive. Conservatism doesn't work if you refuse to accept that apocalypse is next week. Of course, conservatism and end-times dominionism are pretty much interchangeable terms these days.

There's no need to work and plan ahead if you buy the story that rapture will make all this, the world around, moot. If there's truly no reason to consider the earthly long term, then there's really no need for government, is there?

During the Reagan years, dear James Watt wanted to allow drilling for oil off the beaches of California. If that beautiful stretch of sand and sea were destroyed by slicks; well, so what? It was all going to go up in a big godly puff soon anyways. Or a flood.

Just started reading Thomas Frank's The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule, which reminds us that all the nutty Jesus stuff is just an insincere pandering for votes: let 'em rally, so long as it's around OUR flag.

Conservatism here is all about money, pure and simple. Let the hurricane strike where the money is--DC, say--and the world would look very, very different.

I hadn't heard about that book. I read Frank's What's the Matter with Kansas? and loved that.

Joe Bageant's Deer Hunting With Jesus makes a good companion piece to Kansas.

It never ceases to amaze me how people will vote and advocate against their own interests year after year, often their whole lives, for the lamest of reasons.

It's like they're Bob Hope in all those old "Road" movies. He thinks he's got a chance but in the end Bing Crosby always gets the girl.

Wunelle- that 'nutty Jesus stuff' is alive and well here in Ohio. Sadly, you may recall, the state of Ohio gave Bush/Cheney two terms and it was the hard work of the evangelicals who put him over the top here.

I'm working hard on my blog to expose these 'christian fascists' and their ugly political positions. Yet, Ohio is still up for grabs.

Dbackdad- What's the Matter with Kansas says it all and, sadly, it extends beyond Kansas: the dumbed-down folks still think that the Democrats are ruining their lives. Did you see Bill Moyer's Journal Friday? The Black brothers detail the reality of it all throughout the South and the Plains states.

Shrimplate- I applaud your work but wonder how you are able to keep your spirit alive surrounded by Bible-thumpers and racists.

Feel free to add your perspective to my blog.

I believe that if you build your house on sand...it might wash away...and it don't matter when the rapture is or isn't coming...you still gotta deal with today. Idiot's keep building on the coast and expecting somebody else to pick up the tab when it all washes to the sea.
